Coronavirus COVID-19 Treatments and Medications

The treatments and medications for COVID-19. COVID-19 is a serious disease caused by a new coronavirus that can affect your lungs and other organs. It can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, and more. Some people may develop severe complications, such as pneumonia, blood clots, organ failure, or death.

There are different types of treatments and medications available for COVID-19, depending on the severity of the infection and the risk factors of the individual. Some treatments are aimed at reducing the viral load and preventing the virus from multiplying in the body. These are called antiviral treatments. Some treatments are aimed at reducing inflammation and preventing damage to the organs caused by the immune system. These are called anti-inflammatory treatments. Some treatments are aimed at providing supportive care and helping the patient breathe better. These are called oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation.

Some of the treatments and medications that are approved or authorized by the FDA for COVID-19 are:

Paxlovid (Nirmatrelvir / Ritonavir Tablets):

This is an oral antiviral treatment that blocks an enzyme needed for the virus to replicate. It is approved for mild to moderate COVID-19 in people who are at higher risk of severe illness. It must be started within 5 days of when symptoms start.

Remdesivir Injection:

This is an intravenous antiviral treatment that interferes with the virus’s genetic material. It is approved for hospitalized COVID-19 patients who need supplemental oxygen or have a higher risk of serious illness. It must be started within 7 days of when symptoms start.

Baricitinib Tablets:

This is an oral anti-inflammatory treatment that reduces inflammation and has antiviral activity. It is approved for hospitalized COVID-19 patients who are on mechanical ventilators or need supplemental oxygen.

Tocilizumab Injection:

This is an intravenous anti-inflammatory treatment that reduces inflammation by blocking a protein called interleukin-6. It is approved for hospitalized COVID-19 patients who are on mechanical ventilators or need supplemental oxygen.

Molnupiravir Tablets:

This is an oral antiviral treatment that causes errors in the virus’s genetic material. It is authorized for mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at higher risk of severe illness and not able to take other treatments.

Dexamethasone Tablets:

This is an intravenous or oral corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by suppressing the immune system. It is recommended for hospitalized COVID-19 patients who are on mechanical ventilators or need supplemental oxygen.

There are also other treatments and medications that are being studied or used in some countries for COVID-19, such as favipiravir, merimepodib, lopinavir/ritonavir, ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, monoclonal antibodies, and convalescent plasma. However, their safety and effectiveness have not been fully established or proven yet.

The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to get vaccinated and follow the public health measures such as wearing a mask, washing your hands, avoiding crowds, and staying home if you are sick. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, you should get tested and contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible to determine if you need any treatment.
